Rambutan is one of popular tropical fruits in Thailand because it produces a very attractive fruit that has an acceptable texture and flavor. Apart from fresh fruit, there is a significant canning industry in Thailand. Thailand exports both fresh and processed fruits, mostly to Malaysia and China, respectively. Other potential markets include the USA, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and the United of Arab Emirates. The EU markets are also of interest. The economic benefit from the export of processed rambutan is about 8.5 times greater than that of fresh fruits. Development of package of technologies for improving rambutan production is focused in R&D program. The cost-effectiveness in producing quality rambutan is also considered. Agriculture Quality Management System will be introduced to assure quality and sanitary of rambutan production. Postharvest technology is being studied to prolong the shelf life of the fresh fruit. In the meantime, diversification of processed rambutan is also emphasized. Appropriate postharvest technology and packaging, and cultivars of processed rambutan are ideas that may contribute towards an increase of market share of Thai rambutan in foreign markets.
